Chinook, (King) salmon Largest of the salmon family, sometimes weighing over 100 lbs. Chinook reach maturity between 3 and 4 years, spawning in the fall. Easily identified by large, irregular dots on back and black gumline inside mouth. Coho (silver) salmon Most Popular and numerous sports salmon. Size averages 5-15 lbs, world record is around 30 lbs. Identified by lightly spotted back and white gumline. Chum (dog) salmon Next to the largest salmon, size averaging between 10-18 lbs. Very good eating when caught in salt water but flesh becomes soft quickly in fresh water (salmon don't eat in fresh water and live while spawning off the fish's fat stores and muscle mass). Sockeye (bluebacks, Kokanee) salmon A small salmon, the maximum size is about 15 lbs usual size is 2-5 lbs. Sockeye are plankton feeders ans few are taken by sports fishermen in salt water. Although commercial fishermen in Alaska fish and catch them with flashers and plastic squids. Identified by "blueish" tint on back and extremely small scales. Pink (humpback, humpies) salmon A small salmon that seldom exceeds 10 lbs. Mostly caught in salt water by netting, (as with sockeyes) and often is the "canned" salmon. Identified by heavily spotted tail and very fine scales. Hope that helps a tad bit Karen... chat with you soon! hap From: Hap Newsom Date: 03 Feb 99
